I'm holding another tutorial / Q&A session aimed particularly at new Toastmost webmasters looking for ways to maximize their use of their website. Scroll down a little for a discussion of options for formatting your event promotions more effectively.

Event Promo Options

When you create a Toastmost account, I include an RSVP Now! promo on the home page by default, but there are actually several different ways of showcasing your upcoming events.

For example, when Online Presenters Toastmasters is hosting a workshop (as we are on Monday), we can highlight it by setting a featured image that will be shown as part of the promo.

Here is a similar setup I recommended for Podmasters Advanced Toastmasters (which is exploring moving its website from Free Toast Host) as shown in the editor. I've opened the Document Outline sidebar so you can see that this layout is represented by a nested series of blocks that you can rearrange or format however you like.

To display the Document Outline in the editor, which is extremely handy for working with nested blocks, click the button in the upper left corner of the screen that looks like 3 descending steps (a hierarchy icon).

These are features of the RSVPMaker for WordPress events and email marketing plugin, which I also use and support for projects outside of Toastmasters. The latest release of RSVPMaker includes a new and improved collection of event and event listing display blocks you can insert into pages and posts.

• RSVPMaker Next Event Loop Blocks: Displays the next upcoming event as shown in the examples above.
• RSVPMaker Event (Embed Single Event): A single block that lets you specify a specific event to display or can be set to display the next event or the next event with RSVP registration turned on. Fewer formatting options. For example, if you create a blog post advertising a specific event, you could embed either an excerpt or the complete event content at the bottom of the post.
• RSVPMaker Upcoming Events: a single block with options for how many events should be displayed and whether to show a calendar grid up top. This is what's used by default on the /calendar/ page of new Toastmost sites.
• RSVPMaker Upcoming Loop Blocks: A set of nested blocks, similar to what's shown above, for an event listing. You can set the number of events to be displayed and customize the Post Template blocks representing the format for each event listing.
• RSVPMaker Upcoming + Calendar Loop Blocks: A variation that includes the calendar grid at the top of the event listings.
• RSVPMaker Upcoming with Cover Loop Blocks: A variation that embeds the event title within the feature image. If no featured image has been set, a gray background will be displayed. (See example below).
• Future RSVP Links: Displays a list of links including the event title and date. Optionally, you can set it to skip the first upcoming event. In the Online Presenters example, I'm using the RSVPMaker Event Query Loops for the next event and Future RSVP Links for the More Events listing.
• RSVPMaker Daily Schedule: Shows multiple events occurring on the same day grouped together under a heading with the date, showing the time (rather than the full date) and an excerpt from the body of the event. Meant for things like displaying a conference program.

There's actually more than that, but enough for now!

Here's the example I promised of the Cover Loop Blocks treatment for a series of events, taken from one of my non-Toastmasters projects for Swank Specialty Produce where we've taken the time to set an featured image for each event. Its more work, but I think it's a nice effect.
